A Quest of Dragons

I did it. After three years, I opened up my DS holder and turned on my Nintendo DS. The battery actually still lasted a few hours without needing a recharge. I can remember why I dropped playing it because it’s awkward to hold and it can be quite a time sink. I’m playing Dragon Quest IV and I have some interesting reactions.

Intro – Okay…ooo the main character gender choice and a shapeshifting friend. Cool!....And that’s it.

Chapter 1 – Someone else now…okay. Ragnar…a guard guy. Cool cool. *Levels a lot* I finally found the blasted kids. It was a lot of going around and asking people stuff to trigger the right thing. But I leveled so much it helped a lot. Healing is the big problem. Oh yay! Healie! The healslime! I always wanted a non-human in my party!...Why isn’t he leveling up? I want to keep him and snuggle his slimy-ness and oozy and gooey love. I also like that he’s going to apparently turn human. Makes me wonder though. Are any other monsters going to turn human? Were they ever human? AM I THE WORST GENOCIDAL PERSON IN THE HISTORY OF THIS WORLD?! I love Healie. Okays. Got the kids back…got my reward. And…end of chapter. Dafuq? Wait…no no no!

Chapter 2 – Really…we start all fucking over? Alright…at least the tomboy main character this time is kinda neat. Not the most riveting character but I found out they CUT ALL THE DAMN PARTY DIALOGUE! So you only get the bare minimum plot X_X. Fortunately I found a fan translation I’m linking below. It’s still a good game but it feels incredibly sparse because of the design choices. I still like it because I like my new party. I may not be able to talk to them but I can come up with what they might be saying. We have Alena (or Elena) if you like, the Princess who likes adventure. The usual but still. And two royal friends, an older man who is more into magic and a guard again. Still…I like the trio. They actually do level up. We kinda screw around a bit…and why can’t I go over? It’s weird…there’s a town where half of the town is blocked off by a locked door. There’s no other way to walk over to that part. It’s quite strange. Maybe super stuff to buy over there? Dunno. It’s weird this particular area has places to sit on the roofs of buildings. I can imagine the guard, the princess, and the old man just sitting down with their bento boxes as the sun sets. I ran into one metal slime and I kicked its shiny ass. I also wound up saving a fake princess by going into a dungeon to get a Transmorgification Bracelet….actually I’d rather keep that for myself and transform everyone for the fun of it. Oh well. Then the king loses his voice and I need to track down Elven honey or something. Did that and the king gives his blessing to leaving the continent. I will say the choice of heavy British Isles accents is a weird choice. It’s not terribly appealing but it doesn’t really kill the game for me. What kills the game is holding the DS and my wrist screaming in agony after a short time. Only five hours but I’ve gotten to the continent crossing stargate to somewhere…I heard that chapter 5 is when they finally introduce the hero proper….geez. I’ll be 20 hours in before the main character even shows up.

It’s a decent game and I’m glad I gave it a try. I don’t know how far I’ll get. I’ve also been meaning to play through at least one Pokemon’s story mode. We’ll see. I decided to get through my DS games before really leaping for a 3DS. I also need to save up for a new TV or at least a portable DVD player because I still have Netflix.

And so much more. Washing the towels I use to avoid the rough, worn spots on my bed cover. I wrote well last night and I still feel like I need to cut things short but we’ll see how it goes. I’ll just keep writing and I won’t try to rush it or anything.

DQIV is without a doubt my favorite game for the NES.

I hope you picked the female hero!  The female hero is strictly better than the male hero, they have the same stats but there are a few items the female hero can equip but the male hero cannot (leotards etc).  Later DQ games would also include some male only items, but in DQIV there aren't any.  The NES version (Dragon Warrior IV) didn't have as much of the over-the-top accents and puns of the DS version.

The chapter structure of DQIV is a bit interesting, really the first 4 chapters are one long introduction, and then the game proper begins in chapter 5.

If you haven't played "The World Ends With You" for the DS, you should try it out.  I recommend it for the setting, which you don't really start to appreciate until the post game "secret reports" you get when you replay it.  Also the gameplay is unique, if a bit overwhelming (but the difficulty settings are very flexible).  Also, unlike silly DQ IV where the male hero cannot wear skirts, in "The World Ends With You", you can wear anything, provided your bravery stat is high enough ^^
