Birthday Day

Got this little poem-like thing from a friend ^^.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KERINA!
I don't have a drawing or a story to celebrate...
but I do have this (poorly written?) poem.

Another year older, another year wiser,
Another birthday to be gone in a blink of an eye.
And whilst I may not have a gift of any sort to give you,
I still wish for you to have a great day.
Imagine all the stories you’ve written in such a life thus far,
A universe that continues to expand.
Aeternals, Aiborae’s, changes in gender, journeys to other worlds,
Puzzle Box’s, mindscrew endings, and even RAWK LOBSTER’S!
Katsumi, Tara, Abby, Korri, Allison, Koral and Marley,
All nurtured with your love, even in the face of cruel fate.
May they one day their struggles reach many a reader,
And inspire the minds of others for the better.
Someday, I hope for a world like your stories,
Where boys have smooth skin, grow breasts and long hair.
Where they don’t need deep voices or strange bulges to live,
And embrace the world of “ZAPPY!”

Daww. Hehe. That’s sweet. As a plus too my computer is working decently well.

So that’s a good thing ^^. One more item of note is that I feel tonight like that song from Despicable Me 2.



There’s just something about this song. It’s as overexposed as Let it Go and it’s quite repetitive but there’s just something which feels so pleasant about it that I can’t really knock it and it makes me feel well…happy ^^.

It’s a pretty good bit of music to go with the show. The only problem is I don’t know if the show will follow its source material well, go for an anime ending or just leave things open in hope of a second season or something.

As a side note, aside from a couple of episodes which you can find on Netflix streaming, the entire catalog of Fairy Tail is now available on Crunchyroll. So that’s a neat new thing to check out. They’re losing an older show called Mouse but I’m not sure if I should bother with it. It is just 12 episodes but I don’t know enough to say whether it’s worth my time to watch until it goes away on Friday morning. It is 15 minutes though. So there’s that…but it’s heavy ecchi so…probably not.

I did watch some new shows and I will talk about them at the end of the journal.

My work right now creatively is going along with my reading suspended until the 16th ends because I refuse to do homework reading on my birthday. So I will be writing before I head to bed and I have a few plans.

I’m not sure if I should post a draft of the novel. I may post it without a title as a draft copy and just appeal for feedback. We’ll see. I really want it to be the best and that requires people read an early version but publishing is still so stuck in the past that prepublishing it online can be a detriment if I want to eventually send it around to potential publishers beyond self-publishing. I need to be careful.

I’m thinking that I might try publishing the novel version of Puzzle Box on Wattpad though or Anime Girls from Another World because the latter had potential cover art and they’re completed. I was reading up and most people on places like that are looking for serialized but already done novels. It’s not pay publishing but it’s a place where it’s more about writing than dA…sorry dA but you’re preoccupied with pretty images and not pretty words so much. I’m still researching where I might find the most professional place and possibilities for good feedback. Still thinking it over.

The only reason a story might vanish from here is if it’s required by some publisher, so that would hopefully be a good sign. But this is looking way ahead of where I am right now and there’s just still pecking away at stories and trying to find a place where someone might be interested in supporting them.

Another possibility I’m considering is something I’ve heard about called Patreon. If I’m spelling that right. Monthly compensation from fans for works. I don’t know enough about it right now but it might be worthwhile if there aren’t too many drawbacks.

Aside from that, I really just want to keep writing. I like it a lot. I always have even though I often look at the word count and stop at weird points where it feels like my pacing has gone as far as it can. I would really feel good if I could finish the first two sections of the mall novel and have it be a decent length. I’m actually writing at a much leaner pace than I usually do. I guess that’s a good thing because certain works I write tend to be more bloated and overwritten. That’s not bad because then I can chop hunks out like Stephen King often recommends to writers.

Let’s see…I know there was something else I wanted to mention but it doesn’t occur to me right at the moment. I know I want to go have a nice meal this evening but I’m not sure what that will really entail. I might even go to a meat market a little ways off the beaten path to try a few things.

OH! I remember what it was. Ideally I want to find a Google Maps pedestrian walkthrough of a major mall. Like the Edmonton Mall which is supposed to be the largest in North America or a walkthrough or the Mall of America seems more likely. I don’t know if either location has done this kind of thing but it’s be very useful since I want the interior of the mall to feel Tardis-like in regards to size so I need a particular massive location and while my imagination is decent there tend to be random mall details which slip my memory and certainly there are a few details from the dream which inspired this story that I can’t hold onto even now. I’m actually tossing a few a like that the mall has areas where you can drive right into it and cars can drive through it with glass around them. I might take some of those details and rework them but again…still thinking that all over.

I’m not even sure how I’m going to get something slightly longer than even Puzzle Box from the concept. I mean I have plenty of characters, plenty of mayhem but then I always wondered how shows like the Walking Dead can get the mileage they do out of “there are zombies in the world which want to eat you and the humans around us are, in some ways, even worse”. It’s going to have to go down to having my characters provide the kindling of a good conflict. I have some setup stuff so far. There’s also the character secrets which will come later. But they’re basically human bugs in a massive alien pitcher plant…I keep having to brainstorm ways they can survive in the long-term because…it’s a stomach that looks like a fancy mall.…just think of all the ways a stomach is entirely inhospitable to living. I’ll figure it out but it won’t be easy. But then I always do enjoy challenges.

So the three episodes I saw were…

Haikyu 2
The World is Still Beautiful 2
Black Bullet 2

All on to second episodes. Which improved? In my opinion, only one of them.

Haikyu 2 - This episode stood pat with the antagonism between the two leads. There’s a female character. An actual female character…and she’s oddly presented in a way which makes me wonder if this isn’t a girl-geared show. I don’t know. It’s definitely no Free style deal. Not quite what I expected. It’s still a good show but it kinda kept things as they were without ramping things up and the payoff which the episode presents is delayed to the third installment.

The World is Still Beautiful 2 - She’s still a lot like Abby, only quirkier but I still like this character. It’s the king boy who is not terribly appealing. I liked the town-folk more. It will take me a while to really get into potentially liking him. There’s still some intrigue about a coup and his sense of brutal thinking is definitely not helping. The resolution at the end of the episode is good and it’s still promising but it’s more middle tier with some promising moments.

Black Bullet 2 - This definitely improved. We get more of the world and the culture and some fucked up shit with how the mutant kids are treated. There’s some genuinely sad moments but I still think the relationship between Enja and the MC is still slightly creepy for their ages. I get it a bit more because of how she was treated and how she came to him and how emotionless she was before. The ending is again open but there’s a lot more promise here especially with the main antagonist and explaining how that weird Harlequin guy can do what he can do and the fact he also has a partner who is incredibly creepy. It’s still working its way up to a better show but it is an improvement.
